Pundits and people alike usually say that England doesn't have the players to win anything. Id say they have too many players they can make the wrong decisions on who to call-up. With them finally qualifying for the upcoming world cup, the only difficulty now for Fabio Capello is to select the right players for this world cup and he will have difficulties.
I can assure the players such as captain John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Wayne Rooney are definitely going to South Africa next year. But the main question is the other players who are vying for the other 18 places in the England squad will be. Here are my predictions.
Firstly, In the Goalkeeping department. England hasn't been gifted with a good goallie in ages since David Seaman, Nigel Martyn & Tim Flowers were still in their prime, but there are a couple of decent goallies to say. Since David James is aging, we're not sure if Fabio Capello would call him up for the team. The media has been building too much hype on Ben Foster to become the next England goalkeeper but i think he's overrated, and im a ManUtd fan as well. Dont get me wrong, hes good and everything but there are far much better goallies out there, particularly in England as I see Robert Green as the better choice to become England's first choice in South Africa. Joe Hart & Paul Robinson too would love to have a go on making the trip but even they know they won't be expecting to be used if they are called-up.
Next, the defence. Terry and Rio would definitely be there, but the other players who are going to accompany them isn't that predictable. Ashley Cole might almost be the first choice left back for Capello, and ever-growing Glen Johnson would complete the first choice defence line-up. The problem that would presist for Fabio may well be the back up for the back four, but i would like to see Wes Brown be in the team as he can easily play at the heart of defence or even play at right back, because he was Englands first choice right-back before he got injured and Glen taking his place. Matthew Upson looks to have won Capello as his 3rd choice centre-back but the rest of the defence is yet to be figured out. After moving to Manchester City, Wayne Bridge seems to become even more confident of playing but Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock looks to challenge Wayne for it. The other place which is 4th choice centre-back the way i look at it will really go down to who plays the best towards the end of the season with atleast 5 defenders staking a claim for it such as Joleon Lescott, Ledley King, Gary Cahill, Jonathan Woodgate, and Curtis Davies. It would be fun to wonder who gets it though.
Seriously i wouldnt even try to predict who would represent England in midfield besides Stevie G and Lamps, but it is makeable. David Beckham would possibly be going though but I can see 4 right wingers who are consistently performing to their highest standards and all are still young at age. Theo Walcott's hattrick againts Croatia in one of the qualifiers would probably be favorites to be going though but Shaun Wright-Phillips is having the time of his life at Manchester City, and Aaron Lennon is running riot keeping David Bentley on the bench for Spurs. James Milner also gets a mention for being one of many Aston Villa's English players.
To accompany the two attackers in midfield, Gareth Barry seems to win over Fabio's heart for that matter. The two Manchester United midfielders of Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves would love to come though, but i doubt both would come because either Carrick is too under-rated or Owen is expected to recover and be fit for the World Cup. Tom Huddlestone is also becoming a force to reckon with great physical presence and a powerful right foot to add. Jermaine Jenas seems to be a forgotten man but he's making a claim again with Spurs getting decent performances and Jenas as one of the stars.
The next problem would be on the left wing. Joe Cole seems to get injured every now and again, but when he comes back he might challenge that place with Ashley Young and Stewart Downing. Barry and Milner can play in that position too though so all is good in that position.
Last but not least is the attacking options. England has a wealthy stock of strikers, its just that they never seem to pick the right ones. Fabio seems to love Emile Heskey because he uses him a lot for England, more times than he has played for his own club, Aston Villa. Jermaine Defoe looks as to be hitting form at the right time as hes been the most prolific striker in the last 2 years. Dean Ashton looks to also be a serious contender but injuries has stopped him from being on the field letting replacement Carlton Cole getting all the form. Face it, Carlton has been a revelation and has been consistent for the past year. Peter Crouch deserves a mention as well as Darren Bent for being rather consistent. Gabriel Agbonlahor is another option surely would get support, his pace is frightning and his finishing is deadly of late. With all these options up front plus Rooney, it looks to me as Michael Owen would never get a comeback to International football if he doesnt start to perform for his new team Manchester United.
So after all that here is my final team prediction, and i would count the mistakes i make when the world cup comes:
GK: Robert Green, Ben Foster, David James.
DF: Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Wes Brown, Joleon Lescott, Leighton Baines
MF: Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Beckham, Ashley Young, Michael Carrick
ST: Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Jermaine Defoe, Carlton Cole, Gabriel Agbonlahor
First choice replacements:
GK: Paul Robinson
DF: Wayne Bridge, Ledley King
MF: Owen Hargreaves, Theo Walcott, Joe Cole
ST: Peter Crouch
Thats it
